What if I told you that Spurs fans aren't the only ones who believe the next dynasty will come from San Antonio? Because it's true. Coming into the season, there was some trepidation about what this team could become eventually, but Oklahoma City was getting most of the benefit of the doubt for the next ruler of the NBA.
Those beliefs have begun slipping, as Max Kellerman has already jumped off of the OKC bandwagon and found himself a comfortable spot on the Silver and Black hype train to nestle into.
"Everything people were saying about OKC and the future and are they just gonna be this dynasty? They're gonna crush everyone. That's how I feel about San Antonio." - Max Kellerman via the Game Over podcast
Kellerman nails it on exactly who the Spurs can be
This team already has the tools to become a devastating force over time. If they went the next few years without adding any pieces at all, they would still likely be the best team in the league. The front office hit on every single draft pick that they needed to fill out a well-rounded roster full of young, talented players with that dawg in them. They just need time to grow.
Just think about what we're watching already. Victor Wembanyama is only in his third year; Stephon Castle is in his second, while Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant are just getting started. Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson haven't hit their primes, and De'Aaron Fox is only 28. Luke Kornet is the perfect backup, Julian Champagnie is the ideal 3-and-D role player, and Mitch Johnson looks extremely capable.
This team is rampaging through the league, spreading their dominance like wildfire in a dry forest, but they're still wet behind the ears like baby seals. The Spurs have already figured out how to win a bunch of games, but there's still so much for them to learn and improve on.
The Slash Bros have been hitting 40% (Harper) and 37% (Castle) of their threes over the past 15 games. That's a huge reason why this team has barely lost lately. The defense is almost always there for this ball club, but when their young guys can knock down shots like that, they become unguardable.
As they get older, they'll become more consistent. They'll get stronger. The same will happen for Wembanyama, and he's already a menace on the floor as the soon-to-be undisputed best player in the NBA. And don't even get me started on Bryant's potential. The Spurs defend, rebound, assist, dominate the paint, and on some nights, shoot it better than most right now.
There really isn't much else in a basketball game. It's only sensible to believe that as they improve, so will their hold on the league because as awesome as OKC is, they don't have the Alien. That matters.
