San Antonio needed another body in the paint.

The San Antonio Spurs look markedly different than they did a week ago. With De'Aaron Fox now operating as Victor Wembanyama's partner in crime, this team has a legitimate chance to level up and make a run for one of the Western Conference play-in spots. It will certainly be an uphill climb, but the Spurs now have a more talented roster with which to weather the storm of their schedule in the West.

As we saw in San Antonio's Friday night matchup with the Charlotte Hornets, Wembanyama is not going to play well every single night out. And when he has an off night, the Spurs are going to need additional bodies in the paint, especially after Zach Collins officially left town ahead of the trade deadline. That makes San Antonio's Saturday morning acquisition of Bismack Biyombo a very smart move.

Chris Haynes announced just before noon that the Spurs would be signing Biyombo to a 10-day contract. They will likely use this limited period to play Bismack legitimate minutes as a way to gauge his fit with the rest of the roster. Should they see him as someone who can help them win basketball games, it would not be surprising for San Antonio to sign him to another 10-day contract after this current one runs out.

Bismack Biyombo is signing a 10-day contract with the Spurs

According to the NBA's rules, a player can only be signed to two 10-day contracts in a single season. After those 20 consecutive days are up, the team must decide to either sign that player for the rest of the season, or waive them. So, in essence, we will know Biyombo's future in San Antonio by the end of February at the latest. Should he sign a second 10-day deal in succession to the first, that contract would be up by February 28.

Biz (as he has been affectionately known in other cities he has played) is a true NBA journeyman, as the Spurs will be the seventh team he has suited up for in his 14-year professional career. Everywhere he has gone, Biyombo has brought solid interior play and has really stepped up as a veteran leader in the locker room in his later years as well.

He is not going to be a total game-changer for San Antonio, but his presence is needed. Biyombo may end up looking like an underrated addition for this squad by season's end.
