The moment you’ve all been waiting for has arrived, and it was just as magnificent as you imagined it would be. The Spurs threw a bit of a monkey wrench in the plans of fans who were ready to erupt in celebration of the first Chris Paul lob to Victor Wembanyama when they sat them for the preseason opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Wembanyama and CP3 gave the fans what they wanted
The story was different in game two, with the Orlando Magic visiting the Frost Bank Center. The dynamic duo took the court together, and the only question was how long would it be before the lob came.
They ran a few pick-and-roll actions early, but a tough Orlando squad was paying close attention to Wemby on the roll. It was clear they were trying to prevent the magic from happening for San Antonio, but they couldn’t hold it off forever. With less than a minute left in the quarter, the Point God set up another pick-and-roll from the wing, and the Alien got loose.
The lob did happen. The eyes of Spurs fans everywhere shot up in unison as they threw their hands to the sky to celebrate such a monumental occasion. Chris Paul was a master on the floor; that's what you expect. He was poised and kept control of the offense.
There were a few hiccups that manifested in the form of two turnovers, but the team as a whole is working on that. CP3’s presence will help keep those down as he learns the team and the team learns from him and Harrison Barnes. In the meantime, there will be plenty of highlight plays to get excited about.
We’re all thankful for that. You can add on a thank you for a team that looks like they can start winning games right out of the gate. It will undoubtedly look even better once Devin Vassell gets back, but Champagnie and Mamu’s three-point shooting has significantly improved as long as what they’ve shown through two games is the new norm and not a start-of-the-season blip.
Stephon Castle has looked every part like the player he was projected to be and more. He took control of the game once Victor and Chris Paul sat for the night. Blake Wesley has been filling up the stat sheet in the assist column. Players are stepping up left and right. It’s going to be a fun season, so buckle up.
