Spurs reveal latest on Coach Gregg Popovich's health situation
On Saturday, November 2, the San Antonio Spurs were gearing up for a big matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves when a report came out revealing Coach Popovich wouldn't be courtside. Mitch Johnson would take charge of coaching duties, and it wasn't a big deal because Johnson had stepped in before.
But we're at six games now, and while there was an update stating that Coach Pop would be okay, the nature of what happened had been kept under wraps, keeping the concern in the fan base high. However, the Spurs have now revealed the details of Pop's health scare.
Coach Johnson will continue as interim head coach
It's important to note that the Spurs are not being vague when they say, "A timeline for his return has not been determined." It's best not to speculate on the timeline when so much depends on how the individual.
Coach Popovich is 75 years old and still has four years left on the five-year deal he signed last summer. He's in his 29th season as head coach for the San Antonio Spurs.
In the meantime, Mitch Johnson will continue coaching the Silver and Black, who are 3-3 in the six games he has led. San Antonio is three games into a five-game homestand with the Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Lakers up next.
The Lakers game is the start of a three-game stretch that will test Coach Johnson with some of the most elite talent in the NBA. He'll have to lead the Spurs through the Dallas Mavericks on the road, followed up by a game back home, but it's against OKC. Granted Oklahoma City won't have the services of Chet Holmgren, but they have plenty of firepower to make up for it.
Johnson has been doing a fine job so far, but he'll need to lean on his veterans, Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, if the Spurs want to get through a tough stretch of the game while everyone is going through such a tough time.
For the guys, they'll have to keep their eyes on the goal; Coach Pop wants that. For Coach Pop, he just needs to get better; Spurs Nation wants that. Get well soon, Pop.
