Increasing speculation Giannis wants out must be ignored by Spurs

It's enticing to think about, but no.

It can be difficult to be a sports fan when your team is losing at a rapid pace because when you watch other teams thrive, you can't help but think about what your team is lacking. When that loss spans years, that desire for more becomes even stronger. You start throwing out any suggestion that may move the needle, even the tiniest amount, but not everything that glitters is gold.

Spurs fans must continue to trust the front office

The San Antonio Spurs are in the midst of rebuilding their team around Victor Wembanyama. While most believe the rebuild has been going on for years, there is a sobering reality that must be accepted, and Jeff McDonald from San Antonio Express-News hit it right on the nose.

There is no way the Spurs could have guaranteed that they would earn the right to draft Victor Wembanyama. Up until they had that pick in hand, they had to have a different plan because 'hope' is not a strategy. Now that Vic is on the roster, they can assess and build around him as the core piece. It's not ideal to restart a rebuild, but if you're going to do it, you'd want to do it around an alien.

While it's fair to criticize the lack of shooting, seeing as how the league moved toward a 3-point-centric style years ago, San Antonio is working on the problem. Understandably, fans want them to work faster, but that needs to remain the focus. After so much losing, some reach a mindset of wanting everything shiny.

It turns into constant criticism due to the belief the Spurs should go after every superstar, every shooter, or draft this guy or that guy. A report just came out indicating Giannis Antetokounmpo may be growing frustrated with his situation in Milwaukee, and it didn't take long for the Silver and Black faithful to begin calling for San Antonio to get involved. But they shouldn't.

San Antonio is headed in the right direction

Giannis is almost 30 years old, and if Trae Young at 26 didn't "fit the timeline," as so many fans claimed when those rumors were swirling, Giannis would be like Captain America searching for a speakeasy after being defrosted. Wemby is and would remain the featured player, so he needs more shooting around him, and outside of his rookie year, the Greek Freak has never shot over 30% from deep.

San Antonio is counting on their homegrown players to improve their shooting from distance. Granted, that would have been easier if they never let Chip Engelland go to OKC. You can see the impact he's had on their young, dynamic core, but the past is the past.

They have several talented players on the roster, and a few of them are likely on the bubble. If they don't turn it around this season, the Spurs will likely move on. With the number of picks possible in the upcoming draft and the other assets they have in reserve, SA will be in a perfect position to radically change their roster, but they want to give their guys every chance to thrive first.

That's exactly what you should want from the organization because it helps reinforce a strong reputation for taking care of guys. As Wembanyama continues to take leaps and free agents consider San Antonio as a destination, that reputation will matter immensely.
