San Antonio's season is done, and while it's concluded with an anti-climatic thud, the future is still bright in Alamo City. However, to reach their potential, they'll need to be more intentional with addressing the biggest problems on the team. Rebounding and shooting have been a problem for the Spurs for years now, and continuing to handle it by hoping guys improve won't work. Hope is not a strategy
Fortunately for the Silver and Black, the upcoming free agent and draft classes are full of players who can help them fix these issues. The summer of 2025 has been looked at as the perfect time to get aggressive for San Antonio because of the plentiful options and their asset vault. So, let's look at what an ideal offseason could look like for the Spurs.
Spurs would knock it out of the park by getting these players
The first person Brian Wright should call is Guerschon Yabusele. He only signed a one-year deal with the 76ers, so he'll be available in the summer. The French big man has more than outperformed his $2 million deal. He'll be looking to get paid, but his relationship with Victor Wembanyama could help the Spurs get him on a team-friendly deal.
Yabusele plays with infectious energy, and his production matches it. Philly's backup center is shooting 39.2% from three this season and averaging 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds. He'd be a great addition to this team, giving them a player who can do all the things they need.
Sandro Mamukelashvili and Charles Bassey will be free agents. The Spurs can let them walk. Bassey is injured too often, and they don't play Mamu much, no matter what he does anyway.
Gary Trent Jr. is an honorable mention in the free-agent class. He's a career 38.9% three-point shooter and is shooting 41.9% this season. He would be a valuable offensive weapon coming off the bench. He's not great on defense, but how have the "defenders" off the bench been working for the Spurs this season? At least the opposing team would have to fear Trent Jr. getting hot.
The draft will be filled with talented prospects who can come in and contribute immediately, but they'll need to pick guys who already specialize in those areas. Spurs fans don't want to see another project player who can't shoot and lacks physicality. They'll have two picks to bring guys in unless they trade out of a spot or move up.
San Antonio must draft a shooter, so any of these guys would work: Liam McNeeley (SF-UConn), Tre Johnson (SG-Texas), or Kon Knueppel (SF-Duke). If they're going for a physical player, the draft has options there as well: Khaman Maluach (C-Duke), Derik Queen (PF-Maryland), or Rasheer Fleming (PF-St. Joseph's).
Fleming isn't projected as a lottery prospect right now, but that could change. The Spurs could move down, etc. Maybe there's a better prospect than the two-way big from Camden, New Jersey, but he's certainly a good fit.
The point is that the Spurs have plenty of options that will give them exactly what they need. They can't mess this up, or it will be a catastrophic failure by the front office. 2025 is the year San Antonio makes a real push for the playoffs. If they don't, it's because of the work done or not done to bring in the right players.
