On Thursday night, San Antonio Spurs fans and the rest of the NBA's fanbases were treated to an incredible ending in the Chicago Bulls-Los Angeles Lakers game. With 12 seconds remaining in the game at United Center, the Bulls found themselves down five. Coming out of a timeout, they quickly inbounded the ball and Nikola Vucevic found Patrick Williams for a three-point shot. Two-point game.
Then, on the Lakers' ensuing inbound pass, LeBron James' pass was picked off by Josh Giddey, who found Coby White for another three. Bulls take a one-point lead. After a Los Angeles timeout, Austin Reaves drove in the lane and scored a layup, giving the Lakers a one-point advantage. Then came the moment of truth.
Chicago inbounded with 3.1 left on the clock and got it to Josh Giddey, who pulled up for one last shot and a chance at the win. The ball bounced off the back of the rim and splashed through the net, giving the Bulls an improbable victory. When the dust had settled, it was easy to see that this entire sequence was made possible through the efforts of Giddey. Chicago does not win that game without his steal, and then obviously his half-court game-winner.
San Antonio has monitored Giddey as far back as the 2024 offseason
Why does this matter to Spurs fans? Because Giddey was a past target for San Antonio, and he could become one again in the future. If you recall, a January report from Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer indicated that the Spurs have had interest in trying to acquire the Bulls guard.
Fischer wrote this in his article: Giddey has likewise been a young guard that San Antonio has envisioned possibly pairing with Wembanyama down the road. He notes that the Spurs had their eye on Giddey as far back as the 2024 offseason.
This would be an interesting duo in San Antonio, and we saw the upside of his talent in this wild Thursday night game. Giddey is a high-IQ player, makes the right reads and is routinely in the right place at the right time. It totally makes sense why the Spurs would have been interested in him in the past.
Putting that kind of intelligent playmaker around Wembanyama would be smart, especially if Chris Paul is gone this summer. This connection with Giddey could be something for fans to continue to monitor.
