Well, okay then.

Dylan Harper's future has been one of the most discussed offseason topics since the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Calls for last summer's number two overall pick to start have been loud, and a recent rumor suggesting Harper's camp may "demand a spot" as a starter only poured fuel on the fire. But it didn't take long for Ron Harper Sr. to catch wind of the talk, and he strongly refuted it.

This is either good news or bad news, depending on which side of the De'Aaron Fox fence you're on. Some believe his services are no longer needed, seeing his presence as a barrier to Harper's potential. Others see the value in keeping the three-headed guard attack going, believing Swipa can be even better next season.

The 5x Chicago Bulls champion father didn't put an end to that conflict. Spurs Nation will keep fighting over Fox's role on the team and whether he should even have one. What it does settle is a different concern entirely. If we're to believe that the Harpers are on the same page, it further confirms Dylan's strong character, as he seemingly lacks interest in creating distractions.

And that's one of the most important traits a star in San Antonio could have.

Keeping Harper and Fox together is best for the Spurs

As long as these guys can settle into their respective roles without allowing ego to take over, they'll be best together right now. As talented as Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper are, they're still young players, and they'll have moments when that reality shows. Having another playmaker to put pressure on the basket and make the right decisions is an asset.

For all the critical mistakes he made during the NBA Finals, he made way more positive things happen for the Silver and Black throughout the year. He may be 28, but it was his first time making it that deep into the postseason, so those errors will serve as lessons for him, as well. They'll likely gnaw at him during the summer, driving him to be better next year.

The Spurs deserve to be the ones to receive the benefits of that determination.

Meanwhile, Harper also gets to grow with less pressure on him. He doesn't have to start, and if he makes a mistake, he has a strong support system to catch him. The savvy rim-runner is going to be a superstar in this league. His career will be long. There's plenty of time to make his way into the starting lineup, but right now, the Spurs' current construction gives them an advantage.

Victor Wembanyama's gravity opens up driving lanes, so having three downhill guards with their own unique styles is a nightmare for teams. It's only going to get worse for opponents as the Spurs' core grows together.
