The Houston Rockets are hanging on by a thread, much to the amusement of the San Antonio Spurs. They are currently down 1-3 to the Los Angeles Lakers in their first-round playoff series, and their season could very well be over soon. Given the vibes around their team, that may be for the best.
San Antonio nearly traded for Durant back in the summer but backed off when the Phoenix Suns demanded too much. Instead, the Rockets swooped in and acquired Durant.
That is looking like a misfire despite him having a strong season. He simply hasn't clicked on a young Rockets team. In fact, things haven't been the same since Durant allegedly used burner social media accounts to insult his teammates.
He has a history of using burner accounts, and instead of addressing the allegations head-on, he opted to ignore them. Having a teammate who allegedly criticized you and never addressing the elephant in the room likely didn't do much for morale.
The Spurs dodged a bullet that the Rockets took head-on
While the Rockets are imploding, the Spurs seem to have immaculate vibes. I dare say this team is similar to the 2014 championship Spurs in terms of chemistry as well as depth.
That is what has separated this team from the Rockets. It also helps that the Silver and Black have a coach who is maximizing his team's talent.
Compare that to Rockets coach and former Spur Ime Udoka. He has been harshly criticized by Rockets fans for a lack of leadership and questionable X's and O's that have put Houston in a hole.
That, combined with the drama surrounding Durant, has nearly toppled the Rockets. Spurs fans love to see it.
The Rockets' future is suddenly in question
Entering the playoffs, Houston was expected to have a cake walk to the West semi-finals. Instead, they could very well be eliminated by the Lakers.
That raises major questions about Houston's future. Durant has seemingly burned bridges within the Rockets. Meanwhile, Alperen Şengün's play has left a lot to be desired.
Not only that but Houston may need a new coach, an actual starting-caliber point guard, and more shooting. That's a lot to fix this summer.
It's clear that they are a step behind the Spurs and may have to take another step back before taking a step forward. That could mean they trade Durant and retool their roster to add more shooting.
Otherwise, the Rockets will continue to be less than the sum of their parts while the Spurs continue to fire on all cylinders.
