On a recent episode of
Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul, the Klutch Sports CEO made a statement about Victor Wembanyama that plenty of San Antonio Spurs fans were already thinking. Paul said that if Wemby begins playing efficient basketball every single night, there would be no stopping the Spurs. And he's correct. This is the one final element of Victor's game that he needs to improve.
Efficiency has always been the last missing layer for Wembanyama. The talent is impossible to debate. He's already one of the most dominant interior defenders in the league, he alters every shot around the rim, and he alters the opposition's game plan the moment he steps on the floor.
The only thing holding him back from becoming an MVP-level force is the night-to-night consistency that Rich Paul referred to. When Victor takes smart shots and uses his gravity to create for teammates, San Antonio looks like a legitimate threat in the Western Conference.
And this season, Wemby has shown real progress as he begins to clean up his shot profile. The Spurs coaching staff has emphasized simplicity and decision-making, and it has paid off with more efficient stretches and fewer wasted possessions.
Victor Wembanyama needs to score more efficiently
What makes Paul’s point so compelling is that the Spurs have already learned how to win without Wembanyama being perfect. They went 9-3 without him this season because the roster around him is far more complete than it was in either of the last two seasons.
Stephon Castle looks like a future All-Star, Dylan Harper has tremendous potential as well, and De'Aaron Fox's steady veteran play ties it all together for San Antonio. When Victor plugs into that framework with a more polished approach, the ceiling becomes enormous.
The Spurs have also leaned into a defensive identity that suits Wembanyama’s strengths. They are among the best in the league in opponent field goal percentage inside the arc this season and have quietly become one of the most disciplined teams in late-game situations. Now that Wembanyama is back, those numbers are only going to continue improving.
This is the blueprint for a team that's ahead of schedule. San Antonio is winning close games, showing resilience, and developing its core in a way that positions the franchise for long-term success. If Wembanyama adds consistent efficiency on top of everything else, Rich Paul is 100% right. There will be no stopping the Spurs.
