Could a third Spurs and Kings blockbuster happen this summer?

Former Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox has been with the San Antonio Spurs for a little more than a month now and appears to be getting acclimated to the team. Even after recently returning to Sacramento to play as an opponent for the first time in his career and getting booed, Fox was quick to point out that he is happy playing in the 210. Not only that, but the Spurs were his first and only choice after having a falling out with the Kings.

Despite Fox's poor reception in Sacramento, a recent report by the Athletic's Sam Amick and Anthony Slater suggests that Domantas Sabonis could have the same reservations that Fox did prior to him being traded. According to them, Sabonis will sit down with the Kings this summer to see about the direction of the team.

Considering that Fox seemed less than impressed with the team's plans, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Sabonis could reach the same conclusion. In that case, he could be put up on the trade block, in which case the Spurs name might come up yet again.

Sabonis is an extremely talented player, but his fit on many teams is questionable, considering that he is a great offensive player but not good enough defensively to anchor a team on the other end of the floor.

One of the few teams he would excel on is the Spurs, who could pair him with Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama would give him cover on defense while being able to maximize his offensive gifts.

Will Sacramento Kings star Domantas Sabonis become available?

The Kings continue to find themselves the target of trade rumors, and if Sabonis wants out, then they could be facing a rebuild. Considering that the Spurs and Kings have already made two big trades in less than six months, it's not impossible that a third could happen involving Sabonis.

The Spurs still have enough assets to be able to make a big trade, including Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and plenty of first-round picks. The question would be whether the Kings would be interested in adding two wing players when they have DeMar DeRozan and Zach Lavine both under contract for at least two more seasons.

The odds are that moving Sabonis would trigger a rebuild, and teams with a talented big man are probably unwilling to swap them for Sabonis unless it's a clear upgrade. That doesn't even include whether they would have the picks to make a trade happen. That could mean the Kings may have to take back a guard and/or a wing in a potential deal involving their best player.

Should the San Antonio Spurs trade for Sabonis?

Given how Vassell has played this season, there is reason to worry about his contract. It will pay him $105 million over the next four years. Meanwhile, Johnson's long-term fit is still somewhat of a question, but he has played far better post All-Star break.

Nevertheless, if the Spurs were to trade for a star such as Sabonis or perhaps Kevin Durant, those are the two players that would probably need to be included to match salaries.

Sabonis' familiarity and success with Fox and even Harrison Barnes would likely make for a seamless fit. Especially with his passing ability and offensive fit next to Wembanyama, who can hide his defensive flaws in a way that no one else can.

It's tempting, but the Kings had limited success with Fox, Sabonis, and Barnes. They didn't have Wemby, but the Spurs are really only a few tweaks from being a playoff team, and with internal improvement from Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, they could be a contender.

Sabonis would undoubtedly help them, but the cost is prohibitive, and San Antonio would be better off using their two firsts and the mid-level exception to help address their flaw. Thus, they should pass on Sabonis if he becomes available.
