With the San Antonio Spurs having the second and 14th picks in the 2025 NBA draft, they have two chances to add to their impressive young core. Assuming they don't trade the second overall pick, it's all but certain they will select Rutgers guard Dylan Harper second overall.
That leaves the 14th pick up for grabs, and there are a few directions they can go with that selection. One option that has come up recently is to trade the 14th pick, Devin Vassell, and Harrison Barnes in a potential deal for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant.
That would obviously be a terrific use of that pick since they would only be giving up one long-term asset for a player who is still playing at a superstar level. Durant would help solve a lot of the team's problems this season. Particularly shooting and defense, with Durant still being elite on both sides of the ball.
Who should the Spurs draft with the 14th pick?
With several players pulling out of the draft and others moving up the board, the pool of viable prospects available at 14 has slimmed down some. If the Spurs are looking for a wing, then Carter Bryant would be the top option with his size, length, shooting, and defensive potential.
Cedric Coward could be another option, since he is an impressive 3-point shooter with NBA-level athleticism and defensive prowess. The big man options are far better, however, with Thomas Sorber, Rasheer Fleming, and Joan Beringer.
Sorber doesn't project as a stretch-five, but he is an elite finisher in the paint and has terrific defensive ability thanks to a massive wingspan and verticality. Meanwhile, Fleming is a top choice among Spurs fans.
He is a proven high-volume 3-point shooter and has excellent size, length, and impressive athleticism. Fleming could be an impactful defender in the NBA, with eye-popping defensive stats to back it up.
Beringer is a project and perhaps even a draft-and-stash candidate. However, he has the potential to be a rim-running center who can protect the rim, rebound, and more than capably guard switches.
Should the Spurs trade the 14th pick?
Despite rumors of a potential Durant trade involving the 14th pick, the Spurs still have several trade options, including that deal. One option would be to trade the 14th pick and Keldon Johnson for Brooklyn Nets sharpshooter Cam Johnson. The Nets are reportedly shopping Johnson and looking to move up in the draft.
They already have the 8th, 14th, 26th, and 27th picks in the first round. Nevertheless, they are looking to package Johnson and one of their later picks to land a second lottery selection.
They are currently targeting a pick in the back half of the draft lottery, as evident by them speaking with the Toronto Raptors and Houston Rockets, who own the 9th and 10th picks in this year's draft, respectively.
If neither team agrees to their offer, then the Spurs might be able to entice the Nets with a player who is seven years younger than Cam Johnson in addition to the 14th pick. That would be a nice deal for the Spurs if they were to land Cam Johnson, considering he fits the Spurs' needs far more than Keldon Johnson does.
Lastly, the Spurs could trade the 14th pick for a future first. One such option would be to trade that pick to a team such as the Denver Nuggets for a 2030 top-1 protected pick swap and an unprotected 2031 first. That could result in the Spurs getting two future lottery picks for the price of one.
Overall, the Spurs' best option would be to trade the pick for Durant. If that deal falls through, there are a couple of viable trade options available; however, if they decide to use their pick, Carter or Fleming would be the best choices.
