The San Antonio Spurs are fast approaching the highly-anticipated 2023 NBA Draft, where they will undoubtedly select Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick and make him the newest face of their storied franchise. Although front office brass has been tightlipped about his impending arrival, one of the loudest personalities on the team shared their thoughts on the towering French phenom.

FOX West Texas journalist and Air Alamo alum Damien Bartonek sat down with Zach Collins via Zoom for an exclusive interview earlier this week, and the colorful seven-footer provided several fascinating soundbites throughout their chat. Not only did Collins discuss the details of his offseason routine, but he also opened up about how adding Wembanyama to the roster will impact the Spurs next season.

"It's not every day you go against someone three or fourth inches taller than you as a seven-footer [...] We're going to go at it every single day. Every practice we had this year was super competitive, so it's only going to get more and more competitive."

Landing a positionless prospect with genuine ball skills and generational defensive potential has the Alamo City bursting with excitement, and hearing Wemby will inspire a surge in competitive intensity is the icing on top of an already mouthwatering cake. Spurs fans might even pass out envisioning the friendly battles the 7-foot-5 teenager will have against Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, and Collins.

While the Silver and Black tallied 60 losses last season, Wembanyama is the cornerstone everyone has been waiting for to usher in another era of championship contention. He is an all-time talent on both ends of the court, with an unprecendeted package of phsycial tools and feel for the game. He may not be prepared to lead San Antonio to a title in year one, but playoff berths are on the horizon.
