NBA action is so close you can almost taste it. The events leading up to the NBA season are like clockwork: the NFL kicks off its regular season, new episodes of Law & Order: SVU air, and then, finally, the NBA preseason begins. But before the players lace up their sneakers and hit the court, there's plenty of preseason excitement for Spurs fans to keep an eye on.

Spurs fans should keep an eye on these dates

One of the most important upcoming dates for the Spurs is October 31. That’s the deadline for San Antonio to pick up the team option for Victor Wembanyama's 2025-26 season. It’s almost a formality at this point, as Wembanyama is the obvious face of the franchise.

Along with Wemby, Jeremy Sochan and other young players will also be part of those team option decisions. While it's a routine process for core players, it will still be a comforting reminder that Wembanyama is locked in to continue wearing the silver and black for a long time.

Another date to circle is September 30, which is when the Spurs will hold their annual media day. It’s an exciting time as the entire team gathers to answer questions about their summer and the upcoming season. This is also the day that they'll take those long-awaited team photos and show off this year's jerseys.

Fans will get their first chance to see the new roster additions—Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes, and Stephon Castle—alongside Victor Wembanyama and the other guys. With so much hype surrounding the team, media day will surely be a must-watch event for fans amped up to see these boys start vibing together.

Training camp and preseason action start up quickly

The day after media day, October 1, training camp officially begins. The start of training camp signals the beginning of a fresh NBA season, and for the Spurs, it's an opportunity to start building their game plan and work on meshing the team’s veterans with their younger talent.

Chris Paul’s leadership and experience, coupled with Wembanyama’s immense potential, has fans anticipating a big year for The Alien.

As for preseason games, the Spurs will kick things off on October 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s the first of five warm-up games where the team can experiment with lineups, see how the new pieces fit, and give fans a glimpse of what’s to come.

The rest of the preseason schedule includes the Orlando Magic on October 9, the Utah Jazz on October 12, the Miami Heat on October 15, and wrapping up with a game against the Houston Rockets on October 17.

While the preseason is a time for getting tuned up, the real excitement lies in how the Spurs will gel as they head into the regular season. Wembanyama’s growth, the experience and leadership of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, along with the contributions from players like Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan will be key to determining how successful the Spurs can be in the 2024-25 season.

The regular season tips off in Dallas on October 24, and Spurs fans have a lot to be excited about. Whether it's watching the team’s new dynamic or waiting for the formal extension of their rising star, this upcoming stretch is the perfect time to get reacquainted with the team. After all, the journey to a new NBA season always starts with these first steps, and it's time to strut.
