Wembanyama makes highlight-level statement in first half vs. Germany
France didn't come out with the right energy to start the semi-finals of the Olympic competition against Germany. It was a little surprising considering the last time they played this team, they brought the same lethargic energy, leading to a double-digit loss. They were even down 10 points early in this ball game, but something clicked for the team, and they started to make a run.
The San Antonio Spurs' crown jewel, Victor Wembanyama, wasn't exempt from the slow start. He's been struggling with his offense for several games now, and it was starting to get concerning. Not from a long-term standpoint, of course, but time is running out to make an impact in his first Olympics and things were looking shaky—until they weren't. Wemby scored a few baskets in the second quarter, including this emphatic dunk to tie the game.
Wembanyama and France have what it takes to guarantee a silver medal
France lost four out of six games in exhibition play and then lost their final match in group play by 14 points to this same German team. There were understandable concerns regarding their chances to medal, considering those circumstances and the field they drew. Canada was a heavy favorite to land in the final round, but France dispatched them in a very impressive fashion. But ever since head coach Vincent Collet took Rudy Gobert out of the starting lineup, Team France has had new energy.
As the host of the Olympics, their pride is likely a factor, but their determination and attention to detail on defense are carrying them. If they win this matchup, they'll face the winner of the U.S. Team vs. Serbia, and with Wembanyama waking up his offense, their chances are pretty high.
