The international competition has kicked off, and Team France was scheduled for action on day one. Victor Wembanyama's first Olympic test would be against Brazil, as the Frenchman attempts to lead his country to a gold medal in basketball for the first time in the history of the games. They'll have a tough road, but they have the star power to make some noise, and they're off to a great start following their 78-66 win.

Wembanyama was poised from the beginning, despite this being his first time participating in the Olympics, and the French National Team was better for it. San Antonio Spurs fans know exactly what type of performances The Alien is capable of stringing together so, we'll make sure to keep an eye on his stats and update this page after each game.

A tale of two halves for Wembanyama

Wemby made his presence felt on the offensive end in the first half of the game. It was just what the team needed because Team Brazil got out to an early lead and was putting their foot where it didn't belong. Vic led the charge for a thunderous comeback, scoring 14 of his 19 points in the first two quarters, setting X (formerly known as Twitter) aflame. Team France held the lead at halftime for his efforts, with some help from Nicolas Batum, Rudy Gobert and others.

However, The second half was a different story, as Vic struggled to knock down his shot. He went 1/4 from the field in the last two quarters of action but knocked down some free throws and picked up his aggression on defense. All four of his steals and two of his rejections came in the second half of the ball game.

Team France won with a mix of timely offense and stout defense—a formula that will be their best path to victory in every matchup. Team France's next game is on July 7 at 10:15 am CT against Japan.

Wembanyama turns it on when it counts most

Victor Wembanyama wasn't perfect in this game, but that didn't matter. He started the game hot, going 6/6 from the field, and 2/2 from distance for 10 points in the first half. He was showing Japan just about everything in his toolkit that makes him special, and they struggled to handle him.

The problem was that Japan wouldn't go away, as Rui Hachimura was also going berserk, keeping his team in the game. In the second half, Victor's dominance faded. He got beat off the dribble and didn't score a single point through the third and fourth quarters. Fortunately, he is so talented that he can always find a way to contribute, which explains his assist numbers.

It was clear he was frustrated after his teammates pulled through to force overtime, and he took those frustrations out on Japan in the final period, outscoring their entire team 8-6. He also added a block, steal and offensive rebound in the extra quarter. This game was an instant classic that France is glad to be on the right side of. It took a team effort, highlighting that no star can win alone.

Germany made more threes, grabbed more rebounds, made more free throws and scored more points off of turnovers than France in their 85-71 loss in their final game of group play. Wembanyama and the crew were outplayed every which way during the contest, even allowing 52 points between two players: Dennis Schroder (26) and Franz Wagner (26).

Germany's guards and playmakers are more dynamic on both sides of the ball. Other than Vic, France is lacking athletically at every position and was exposed because of it. They need to play with more precision and aggression to overcome their deficiencies. That also means Wemby has to remember who he is and start taking over games from the beginning. If that does not happen, Team France exiting the tournament early, without a chance at the podium.

This would have been a very forgettable game for Wemby, if not for his teammates. They stepped up and carried the load offensively, while the big guy struggled to put the ball in the basket. True to form, Vic found a way to make his presence felt, regardless of his point total. His huge block on Dillon Brooks' fadeaway attempt as the game waned was both timely and hilarious. Eventually, guys will realize that it's a terrible idea to try him like that, but hopefully not before he wins a medal.

France is advancing to the gold medal round after defeating Germany 73-69 in a knockdown drag-out of a game. This game was close for the vast majority of it, and part of that is because Victor Wembanyama struggled with his offense again. The team was getting strong contributions from just about every player who got minutes. Four players reached double digits, and Nicolas Batum chipped in nine more.

But once again, Wembanyama found several ways to impact the game. Besides the three blocks, he did the little things that didn't show up in the stat sheet, showing second and third efforts. His strip of Dennis Schroder's shot attempt in the fourth quarter led to a traveling call and turnover for Germany. His only made three came when his team needed to hold on to the lead as the opposition turned up the heat. The toughest test looms in either Team USA or Serbia, but they'll get a silver medal, regardless.
