Three difficult decisions the Spurs must make this offseason
3. Who should they draft if they miss out on Wemby?
Spurs fans have been able to handle the frustration of a brutal rebuilding season by clinging to the idea their favorite team has a legitimate chance to select Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio has given itself the best odds of winning the NBA Draft Lottery, but what happens if the first overall pick goes to another franchise?
Our Oscar Barkis explored how Amen Thompson could be a viable option for PATFO if they land the third pick, and you should read his outstanding analysis of the Overtime Elite prospect. While the Thompson twins should both be on San Antonio's radar, there is another generational youngster in this class that would be a helluva consolation prize.
Scoot Henderson has scouts touting him as the best point guard prospect since Derrick Rose. And the Spurs could use a blue-chip talent to contend with superstars like Luka Doncic, Zion Williamson, and Ja Morant, who are conquering the Southwest Division.
The G League Ignite standout has a league-ready body with elite vertical explosion, unmatched straight-line burst, and incredible shiftiness off the dribble. Henderson blends those physical tools with an innate feel for the game as a player and an extensive arsenal of scoring moves. He is 100% a no-brainer if San Antonio ends up with the second pick.
Unfortunately for the Spurs, they aren't a lock to luck into Scoot either. As much as fans would love to see the Silver and Black fast-track the rebuild, they will probably select between third and seventh. With that in mind, Brandon Miller, Cam Whitmore, and Keyonte George are some of the names you should get familiar with before the NBA Draft.
General Manager Brian Wright and the scouting department have a bunch of homework to do before the 2023 NBA Draft, and there is no doubt they are already sorting through a laundry list of talented teenagers and early-twenty-somethings.
