It's hard to imagine that there won't be several ways that Victor Wembanyama leaves a lasting impact on the game of basketball. He'll provide plenty of memories and highlights, and he's opened the world's eyes, showing everyone what's possible in a body like his. There's no doubt that history will be kind to the Spurs' franchise player, but there's another way the NBA can pay the ultimate respect to the impact that the giant in San Antonio brings, and it started as a joke.
The NBA needs to implement HELLNAHS immediately
There is immense value in deterring would-be attackers from the basket, even if you don't block the shot. There needs to be a way to quantify it. If a player drives into the paint, jumps in the air for a layup, only to throw the ball out of bounds when he sees a rim-protector like Wemby, it's put down as a turnover and the player who caused it gets no recognition. But that shouldn't be the case and is only one example of why HELLNAHS should be implemented.
Okay, maybe the NBA can come up with a better name for it, but you have to admit the 'HELLNAHS' is much funnier. Come up with any acronym you like to make it work like this guy did. Honestly, the NBA can call it whatever they want, as long as they see to it that the metric is added.
The NBA tracks just about everything the average fan can think of, plus more. They have advanced metrics for their advanced metrics. There has to be a way to quantify rim deterrence. If they do, it will be another stat for Wembanyama to dominate.
