San Antonio Spurs: Updated Depth Chart Following the 2023 NBA Trade Deadline
By Ty Jager
For the second year in a row, the Spurs were busy at the trade deadline. San Antonio made multiple trades, sending out Jakob Poeltl and Josh Richardson to build upon their draft capital and prepare for the upcoming 2023 NBA Draft.
Those trades might have ended the tenure of some fan favorites in San Antonio, but they were moves that helped the Spurs put some pieces in place for the future. With deals finalized across the league, the roster has a brand-new look. Let's break down their updated depth chart for the remainder of the season.
San Antonio Spurs updated depth chart after trade deadline
Point Guard
Player | Height | Age |
---|---|---|
Tre Jones | 6'1" | 23 |
Blake Wesley | 6'4" | 19 |
Devonte' Graham | 6'1" | 27 |
The Spurs made a deal in the last hour of trade season, sending Josh Richardson to the Pelicans for Devonte' Graham and four second-round picks. It's unclear where Graham will be in the rotation, but he will see some minutes as the backup point guard while Tre Jones remains out due to injury.
Shooting Guard
Player | Height | Age |
---|---|---|
Devin Vassell | 6'5" | 22 |
Malaki Branham | 6'4" | 19 |
Romeo Langford | 6'5" | 23 |
With Josh Richardson sent to New Orleans, minutes open up for rookies Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley. Branham has already spent time as a starter this season but could see an increased load. Blake Wesley will also benefit from the extra minutes with a more significant role coming off the bench. Player development will be the keyword for the last half of the season.
Small Forward
Player | Height | Age |
---|---|---|
Keldon Johnson | 6'5" | 23 |
Keita Bates-Diop | 6'8" | 27 |
Stanley Johnson | 6'6" | 26 |
While there were reports that San Antonio shopped Keita Bates-Diop at the deadline, there were no changes to the pecking order at the small forward position. Keldon Johnson will continue to start, while Bates-Diop hopefully continues his sneaky strong season as a reserve.
Power Forward
Player | Height | Age |
---|---|---|
Jeremy Sochan | 6'8" | 19 |
Doug McDermott | 6'6" | 31 |
Isaiah Roby | 6'8" | 25 |
Dominick Barlow (TW) | 6'9" | 19 |
Doug McDermott was also a popular name among Spurs trade rumors, but the veteran sharpshooter remains in San Antonio. The veteran voiced his desire to stick around for the rebuild, and McDermott got his wish. He will likely continue his journey as a mentor for the younger players. Jeremy Sochan has the starting spot locked down, and you might even see some appearances from two-way player Dominick Barlow.
Center
Player | Height | Age |
---|---|---|
Zach Collins | 6'11" | 25 |
Khem Birch | 6'9" | 30 |
Charles Bassey | 6'9" | 22 |
The most noticeable change for the Spurs is at the center position as they traded Jakob Poeltl back to the Raptors in exchange for Khem Birch, a top-six protected 2024 first-round pick, and two second-rounders.
That move immediately promoted former lottery pick Zach Collins to the starting rotation for San Antonio. Collins, like Bates-Diop, has thrived in a role off the bench, averaging a career-high in points per game on 54% shooting from the field. While not the defensive anchor Poeltl was, Collins brings a dynamic offensive skillset that has only continued to improve.
Charles Bassey is also a name to monitor. An increasingly popular player among Spurs fans, he has played in 24 of the 50 games allowed for two-way players. He could find even more minutes after the deadline, though this hinges on how San Antonio utilizes Khem Birch.
Per a recent article from SpursTalk, Dewayne Dedmon might be as good as gone after LJ Ellis reported San Antonio would waive him if they didn't find a new home for the veteran. They also hinted that Gorgui Dieng could return following Dedmon's departure.
