There’s no doubt among Silver and Black nation that the Spurs have done well with this rebuild. It’s taking longer than some of the more impatient fans would like, and there’s nothing wrong with clamoring for success in San Antonio. After all, five championships in 15 years makes the impatience understandable, but the rebuild has been a complete overhaul and will pay off in the long run. It already is.

However, the Spurs are potentially making a mistake in this process that could set them back a bit further than expected if they don’t trade Keldon Johnson. Keldon has a lot to offer the team if he remains in silver and black, but Keldon can also provide value to San Antonio as a trade chip.

The Spurs should move Keldon while his value is high

He’s a young guard/forward who can score. The Kentucky Wildcat can start and be a focal point of the offense, or he can come off the bench and be a contributor for another star player. KJ is young (24) and doesn’t have too many miles on his legs at this point, but he’s also experienced, just finishing his fifth year in the league. He’s got a team-friendly contract for today’s NBA and is likely a plug-and-play addition to any team that acquires him.

You could possibly acquire a player like Anfernee Simons from the Portland Trail Blazers after a recent report that they prefer to move him or Jerami Grant before the season begins. Now is the time to pounce on a dynamic scorer like that.

With the influx of wing players (Stephon Castle, Harrison Barnes, Vassell, etc.) Johnson becomes expendable. His role offensively has diminished in San Antonio and with the Spurs needing to add some reliable depth and shooting to their group of forwards, the trading of Johnson should be the next step in the rebuild.
