The San Antonio Spurs are 3 months into their offseason, and they’ve given the fans a lot to look forward to. Whether you agree with their decision to add vets or not, the move means the team will be more competitive next year; it’s hard to argue with the importance of such a thing after two abysmal seasons. Last year may have provided a ton of entertainment, but highlights can only carry you so far when you’re losing religiously.

Unfortunately, there are still a few months to go before the 2024–25 season begins. Based on last year’s schedule release date, the NBA can be expected to announce this season’s schedule in August. Last offseason, the announcement was made in the middle of the same month, and there’s no reason to expect a deviation from that.

What's different this year is that the NBA Cup is now being referred to as the Emirates NBA Cup. The Spurs group has already been selected, and everything you need to know can be found by clicking this link.

Chet Holmgren humble in his ROY loss to Wembanyama

These are professional athletes, and you don’t reach this level without having an immensely competitive spirit. So, when Richard Jefferson asked Oklahoma City Thunder’s big man, Chet Holmgren, his opinion about whether he thought Victor Wembanyama's winning Rookie of the Year was fair or not, it wouldn’t have been abnormal to hear him poke his chest out. That’s how many of these guys are built, and there’s nothing wrong with it.

To the surprise of many, he didn’t do that. While he did mention that some people have different interpretations of the rules for some of these awards, he was clear in his stance that there was nothing ‘unfair’ about Wemby winning the award. That was nice to hear. You can dismiss anything else said that comes off as bravado because that's exactly what it is.

The Spurs roster is set barring an unforeseen trade

San Antonio’s roster currently sits at 15 players. There are no more spots available except for a couple of two-way contracts, and one of them, likely, has Harrison Ingram’s name on it. The second spot will probably depend on how the rest of the Summer League goes. As for the main roster, it looks just different enough to move the needle once the season starts.

Guards: Chris Paul, Tre Jones, Stephon Castle,  Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley

Forwards: Devin Vassell, Harrison Barnes, Julian Champagnie, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Sidy Cissoko

Centers: Victor Wembanyama, Zach Collins, Charles Bassey

The San Antonio Spurs still have $8 million that they could use by way of the mid-level exception (MLE), but again, they don’t have the space. They could just keep that money saved for a rainy day, in case they decide to make a trade later and need that room for the incoming contract. Otherwise, they would have to waive a player.

The Summer League Spurs are hooping

The Spurs are 3-0 in the 2K25 Las Vegas Summer League. They’ve defeated Portland (83-77), Atlanta (79-76) and New Orleans (90-85). Two of the games have been without Stephon Castle since he was pulled after the first contest due to a wrist injury. The injury is reportedly not serious, and the decision was a precautionary measure. Castle posted 22/5/4 in his sole Las Vegas contest.

Hopefully, the second two-way roster spot goes to Jamaree Bouyea. He’s a 6’2 point guard with blazing speed, averaging 12 points, four assists, three steals and two blocks per game, leading the team in those last three categories. He is a scrappy, high-energy player, and while he may be undersized, his activity makes up for his stature.

The Spurs will play Philadelphia on July 19 at 7:30 pm CT. It is the final game before the Summer League playoffs.
