San Antonio Spurs: Early signs show Kai Jones on radar at 12
With the NBA Draft Combine underway, signs are beginning to emerge that the San Antonio Spurs may have an interest in selecting Kai Jones with their 12th overall pick in the upcoming 2021 NBA Draft.
This past Thursday, news broke that the Spurs held a pre-draft interview with the big man out of the University of Texas. This past season, Jones averaged 8.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and nearly one block and steal per game.
Kai Jones can be a two-way stretch big for the San Antonio Spurs
With Shaka Smart and the Texas Longhorns, while Kai Jones primarily came off the bench as the team's sixth man, he was clearly the star of the show. Despite the majority of the attention going toward Greg Brown at the beginning of the Longhorns' season, Jones proved himself to have the best chance out of his teammates of being picked in the lottery in the 2021 Draft.
Many Spurs fans have had their eyes on Jones since relatively early on in the NCAA season, to the point that we came out with an in-depth analysis of Jones' game earlier this month. While he's still quite raw, as he's only been playing organized basketball since the age of 15, his athleticism and two-way potential are well worth a pick in the lottery.
While Jones isn't the perfect prospect by any means, he believes that he can be a versatile defender for whichever team decides to draft him, and says that he strives to model his game after the likes of Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kevin Garnett.
After his interview with the Spurs, he said that he enjoyed talking with members of the franchise and likes their coaching staff. Spurs fans may want to prepare themselves to hear Kai Jones' name called on draft night, and I recommend being very excited about that possibility.
