Spurs fan proposes Sabonis deal that should ban him from trade machines
By Josh Paredes
When top talents are suddenly rumored to be available for trade, sometimes San Antonio Spurs fans can get a little too excited for their own good. Let's hope that's what the case was with one fan on Tuesday afternoon.
Shortly after Shams Charania announced the Indiana Pacers would be receptive to trade talks involving Caris LeVert and either Domantas Sabonis or Myles Turner, NBA Twitter went wild with ideas.
Unfortunately, a fellow Air Alamo writer drew my attention to this offer -- and I kind of wish he didn't.
The since-deleted tweet proposed sending Thaddeus Young, Bryn Forbes, Keita Bates-Diop, Lonnie Walker, and Drew Eubanks to the Pacers for two-time NBA All-Star Domantas Sabonis and Torrey Craig.
Besides ignoring the part Charania stated about the Pacers wanting LeVert to be part of the deal, this proposal is just laughable for Indiana. According to Shams, the Pacers are moving toward a full rebuild in making these players available. They're not trying to become the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (credit Air Alamo writer Roberto Araiza for this line).
Some Tweets Should Probably Stay in Drafts
I have to credit the author for at least acknowledging the Pacers would say hell no to this trade. And sure, I'll let him dream. But that doesn't mean I can't have some fun with the hilariously bad offer. After all, somebody had to on the behalf of Pacers' fans.
In the coming days, I expect trade machines across all 28 other fanbases to be going into overdrive for the talented Pacers duo. That said, probably 95 percent of those will be of this quality or worse.
If Indiana is serious about finally rebuilding, they will want some assets in the form of young, promising players and picks in such a trade package. They're not going to entertain offers of end-of-the-bench guys and unproven players in return for a guy who averaged 20 and 12 last season.
San Antonio is only one of a handful of teams with the assets to acquire Sabonis and makes sense basketball-wise, but the front office can assuredly do much better than this. Stay tuned to Air Alamo and we'll give some more realistic scenarios very soon.
