San Antonio Spurs depth chart heading into training camp
The San Antonio Spurs took the next steps in their rebuild this offseason, selecting Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and bolstering their roster with trades for dependable veterans like Cedi Osman and Reggie Bullock (with whom they agreed to a buyout). This influx of experience and talent will promote competition and foster development among the young core, but the front office will soon have some difficult decisions ahead of them.
Despite returning numerous players from last season and multiple starters established in the rotation, the depth chart seems like a free-for-all as the Silver and Black prepare for the 2023-24 season. Special Summer League performances put burgeoning prospects on the map, and adding a couple of fresh faces has raised the bar for San Antonio. Here is how the pecking order is shaping up before the team opens training camp tomorrow.

Recent rule changes from the brand-new collective bargaining agreement only allow teams to carry 15 standard contracts and three two-way deals, which means San Antonio will have to cut ties with two players before the season starts. October 23rd is the deadline to finalize opening day rosters across the NBA, and the Spurs will have three weeks to assess preseason execution, weigh all their options, and find a resolution for their logjam.
Khem Birch feels like an obvious candidate to get the boot from General Manager Brian Wright, especially since he never appeared in a game after landing with the Spurs at the trade deadline last season. Dwindling production and persistent knee issues don't do much to help his cause. As for the rest of the squad, everyone should arrive at the practice facility prepared to fight tooth and nail for their place on the totem pole.
