The first year of the Victor Wembanyama era for the San Antonio Spurs has been one marked by development and slow steps to success. The organization is far from putting a championship-caliber team back on the floor once again, but they are playing the long game to ensure they get the most out of their transcendent star player.
Of course, one of the most important steps to building a championship contender is putting the right players around your superstar, and doing it at the right price as well. The Spurs have found several guys that can work as core pieces and complements to Wembanyama, but some are playing on better-value contracts than others.
Based on their current contract value and the level of play each is contributing to San Antonio on the hardwood, these are five Spurs contracts ranked from bargain to nightmare.
Victor Wembanyama: Biggest bargain
We can start with the most obvious of the bunch. Based on the level of player he has been in his rookie season, Victor Wembanyama is easily on the best-value contract. His rookie deal is a four-year, $55 million contract.
He is already playing at a level far above what his $12M base salary this season would indicate. Victor is an incredible defensive power that completely changes how teams play against the Spurs. He frequently deters players from even attempting shots anywhere near him, and incredibly, already has more career blocks than over 80% of the other players across the association.
Offensively, he is still coming into his own, but he is already averaging 21.3 points on 46% shooting and is still improving his jumper. With the ability to make shots from all over the floor and impose his size on defenders, Wemby is a supercharged force with the ball in his hands.
All this to say, Victor is assuredly already a top 25 player in this league, if not higher. The Spurs will eventually be giving him a massive and deserved payday, but for now, his contract is extremely reasonable.
