The NBA Draft is one of the most exciting events in the league, offering rebuilding teams a glimmer of hope to secure their next franchise player while allowing contenders to bolster their roster with a final piece of the proverbial championship puzzle. After another grueling season, the San Antonio Spurs fall into the former category as they try to recapture their former gold standard of perennial playoff appearances.

Though a fourth consecutive trip to the lottery gives the Silver and Black a better opportunity than most organizations to land a cornerstone talent, the NBA Draft is an inexact science. The front office has made no-brainer decisions to select Tim Duncan and David Robinson, uncovered overseas gems like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, and missed the mark with a few upside investments in Luka Samanic and Livio Jean-Charles.

The Spurs have an unrivaled track record of helping prospects maximize their potential regardless of where they came off the board, and they will have three more swings when the 2023 NBA Draft kicks off on June 22nd.

How many rounds are in the 2023 NBA Draft?

The draft has been two rounds since the league office switched to that format in 1989, but that hasn't always been the case. Teams used to make as many picks as they wanted, with the 1968 rendition of the event lasting 21 rounds. The NBA limited the draft to a ten-round affair in 1974, and as clubs became saturated with talent, that number naturally dwindled until we arrived at the modern-day structure of two rounds and 60 picks.

San Antonio has two second-rounders and a lottery ticket they hope will turn into the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. There are numerous valuable prospects the Spurs can mold with the 32nd and 44th picks, but winning the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes would provide head coach Gregg Popovich with the generational youngster he needs to set the good guys back on track as he enters the twilight of his career.
