Devin Vassell ranked with painful accuracy but can change that
Much of the offseason has been spent discussing Victor Wembanyama, and deservedly so. He's a franchise player, a generational talent and all the other superlatives you can think of to describe a unique athlete like him. But there are also high expectations for other players on this roster, namely Devin Vassell.
Vassell has improved every year since he was drafted by San Antonio in 2020, and Spurs fans shouldn't expect that to change. Based on the pattern he's established, nobody should be surprised if Dev jumps into the top-10 shooting guards in the NBA, but he'll have to prove that first. He hasn't done that yet, and HoopsHype ranked him accordingly, based on what they know now.
Vassell is poised to explode next season
13 out of 30 places you just slightly above an average tier when ranking among your positions in the NBA. Now, the list isn't perfect (Austin Reaves at number eight needs serious reconsideration), but it's not far off. Spurs fans have had several debates online with Houston Rockets fans about who is better between Jalen Green and Vassell.
It's easy to root for your guy, but the reality is that they have similar numbers, and only one of them detonated for an extended stretch, averaging 29 points per game during an important three-week stretch at the end of the season as they fought for a play-in spot.
The Georgia native is capable of doing the same thing, but he has to put that kind of display on film before he's placed over guys who have already shown it. His decision-making is going to determine whether he takes that step or not because the ability is there. If he takes more efficient shots, drives aggressively and gets to the free-throw line more, he can catapult himself into the top 10. Oh, and get back to defending like a Kevin Durant Twitter response. We love that.
