It looks like things are starting to return to normal in the San Antonio Spurs stratosphere. The team hasn't made the playoffs in years, but after the additions made in the offseason and the leaps the group is expected to make, that will change soon. The return-to-greatness writing is on the wall, and Victor Wembanyama is the scribe. It's been eight years since the Spurs played on Christmas Day, but it may be time for that wrong to be righted as well.
This is exactly what the NBA should be doing: pushing their young stars. You have a great assortment of young talent on this slate, as well as legendary vets. Fans will always hope for a good game, but you can't always predict how that goes. The least the NBA can do is put some of their most intriguing players on display for one of the biggest holidays in the country.
Spurs have had some awesome moments on Christmas
In 2008, the Spurs had the honor of facing their big-time rival, the Phoenix Suns. It was a tightly contested game. Phoenix's coach at the time was Mike D'Antoni and his squad had been foiled by San Antonio in the playoffs three times prior to this matchup. At this point, every win against Alamo City had to feel great, but he didn't get it that night. Roger Mason Jr. nailed a corner three with seconds left to break an 88-88 tie and give SA the win. I still remember jumping off my couch, yelling, "ROGER THAT!" in my living room.
2016 was the last time the Spurs were on Christmas Day. They matched up against the Chicago Bulls, powered by LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard. Aldridge dropped 33 points on 15-20 shooting, while Kawhi chipped in 25 points and 10 rebounds. Aldridge's performance was one for the ages, and when he was on, it was ridiculously fun to watch. San Antonio won the game handily, and the team hasn't participated since. The city is ready to change that.
