Over a month past the NBA Finals, the offseason would ordinarily be in the dog days. Most fans don't care that much about the Summer League, and for the San Antonio Spurs, the premier pick Stephon Castle was pulled from the lineup anyway, reducing what little excitement there was for those games in the first place. It's hard to drum up energy when the stakes are so low, especially when you're anticipating a significant improvement from your team.

Fans should expect the team to take more than a step forward; expect a leap. Picking up Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes adds more reliability to the Spurs' ability to pull themselves out of a funk, close games and come to each game prepared for the battles of an NBA season. But it isn't just the veterans that you should look to; the players have been putting their best foot forward this offseason and Blake Wesley wants everyone to know that San Antonio is coming.

The Spurs' role players know it's time to bring their best

There have been multiple reports that the players have gotten together for workouts on numerous occasions. When approached at a shoot-around some of the guys were having during Summer League, Julian Champagnie expressed their mindset: "We are adamant about getting better this year."

Zach Collins recently talked about his goals for next season. He understands how important his shooting is to the team. There have been countless videos of Jeremy Sochan in the gym, putting in the work to take steps forward. By all accounts, the players are saying and doing the right things. They'll be ready to compete when the season starts.

Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama has shot 42% on threes in five exhibition games for Team France. He's using a misdirection dribble to lead into a step-back three and drilling it. He ended last season as a top-15 player and there's a real chance he'll enter next year as a top-10 guy. If that happens, the Spurs will be back in the playoff race, where they belong.
