2024 NBA Mock Draft 5.0: Spurs find point guard, Raptors keep lottery selection
By Tyler Watts
12. Oklahoma City Thunder (via Rockets) take Kyle Filipowski
Filipowski declared for the draft after his sophomore season at Duke. The seven-footer is a lottery selection because of his playmaking ability and shooting potential. He improved significantly on both ends of the floor this year, and his potential should intrigue scouts.
This season, Filipowski averaged 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.5 blocks in 30.4 minutes per game. He shot 50.5 percent from the field and 34.8 percent on over three 3-point attempts each night. There were questions about the big man’s foot speed and ability to defend, but he looked significantly more athletic in year two. The 20-year-old will be a drop coverage big man but should be able to hold his own and stay on the floor.
Kyle Filipowski is an offense-first player. He has a unique skill set for a big man but must be able to hold his own defensively to get minutes.
The Thunder need a five and always want players who can dribble, pass, and shoot. Filipowski could blossom into a plus floor spacer capable of operating the offense out of the high post. He would play behind Chet Holmgren but would give head coach Mark Daigneault an alternative and some size inside. Filipowski should thrive as a backup five with room to expand his role.
