2024 NBA Mock Draft 4.0: Spurs get 2 game-changers, Wizards land potential star at 1
By Tyler Watts
16. Philadelphia 76ers select Johnny Furphy
The 76ers have just Joel Embiid under guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 season. President of basketball operations Daryl Morey has a plan to upgrade their roster, and Philly is likely chasing a third star to pair with Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. If that plan works, the Sixers will need role players to round out their roster.
Furphy does not need the ball in his hands to make an impact. He is a lights-out corner 3-point shooter capable of hitting off movement. Sixers head coach Nick Nurse could have some fun scheming ways to get Furphy open as his star talent draws the defense.
The 19-year-old had an up-and-down freshman season at Kansas. Injuries impacted them down the stretch, and Furphy struggled when the Jayhawks needed more production. It certainly hurt his stock, but the teenager could change that narrative with a few standout moments in the NCAA Tournament.
The 6’9 wing will need time to develop. He is a plus athlete who finishes well in transition. Johnny Furphy has plenty of room to grow and must improve on both ends of the floor to be a nightly rotation player in the NBA. Some team will bet on his upside in a draft class light on potential. The Philadelphia 76ers could be that team if they keep this selection.
