5. Portland Trail Blazers choose Ron Holland
Holland could still be the top pick in this class. He entered the season as the favorite to go first overall, but the G League Ignite have been a disaster this season. They started 0-8 and currently sit 4-11. Injuries have played a factor, but Holland’s struggles haven’t helped.
The 6’8 forward is averaging 18.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.0 block in 30.3 minutes per game. He is shooting 48.2 percent from the field, but that is where the impressive numbers end.
Holland has made just 11 of his 42 3-point tries and is shooting 66.7 percent from the free-throw line. Most concerning, the teenager averages 3.6 turnovers per game to give him a scary assist-to-turnover ratio.
Holland still has the size and athletic ability that NBA teams desire, but his negative-21 net rating and negative win shares per 48 through 14 games played have scouts wondering about Holland’s potential. Things have looked a bit better in recent games, and Holland could vault back up boards if his play continues to improve.
The Portland Trail Blazers need wings to add to their young core, and Ron Holland could blossom with a better roster around him. His upside becomes too difficult to pass up at this stage in a draft class filled with uncertainty.
