Shooting Guard: Dalton Knecht
Sharpshooting wing Dalton Knecht is seen as a safe option for teams selecting in the lottery, given his skill set. He is arguably the best shooter in the draft after nailing 39.7% of his 6.5 3-point attempts per game for Tennessee this season, en route to averaging a terrific 21.7 points.
He has predictably drawn comparisons to former Spurs small forward Doug McDermott, partly due to his being a high-volume three-point shooter who put up big numbers in college. That might not be the worst comparison, though Knecht is a better athlete.
San Antonio could also use another shooter like McDermott. And while he may have similar limitations, such as struggling with lateral quickness, causing him to get blown by on defense, if the Spurs were to draft him eighth, he'd fill a need for the Spurs for years to come.
In addition to being a knock-down spot-up shooter, he can shoot off screens and even off the dribble. Knecht probably won't do a lot of shooting off the dribble in the NBA, but it shows he can create shots for himself, including finishing in the paint, thanks to his impressive—I dare say sneaky—athletic leaping ability.
Overall, Knecht might not be the most exciting option for the Spurs, but taking a player who projects to have a long career in the NBA at eight over more risky options has its appeal.
