As the San Antonio Spurs battle for playoff position, they have hit some roadblocks with a couple of close losses. However, despite that, star Victor Wembanyama has shown off his full potential, including dropping 26 points, nine rebounds, and eight blocks against the Philadelphia 76ers.
He also dropped 42 points, 18 rebounds, and four blocks against the New York Knicks. That resulted in a hilarious X post that brings up an interesting point about the Spurs and Wembanyama's potential.
The post expresses relief that Wembanyama and the Spurs aren't a part of the Eastern Conference. However, ironically, the Spurs actually used to play in the Eastern Conference back in the 1970s and even once made the Eastern Conference Finals led by George Gervin.
If that were to happen again in the near future, likely due to expansion, they could dominate. Unfortunately, the Spurs are seemingly stuck in the more dominant conference. Since Michael Jordan retired in 1998, the Western Conference has had 17 championships compared to 10 from the Eastern Conference.
Even though the Spurs may never again play in the Eastern Conference, there have been rumblings that the NBA may do away with conferences altogether. That could mean that the 16 best teams make the playoffs while the rest can kick rocks. That would be more fair since it wouldn't give Eastern Conference teams an unfairly easy route through the playoffs.
It would also give the Spurs a chance to face teams that they may better match up against, especially since the West has most of the best big men, including Nikola Jokic, Anthony Davis, Chet Holmgren, Alperen Sengun, and Domantas Sabonis.
Victor Wembanyama's dominance gives the San Antonio Spurs a competitive advantage.
As Wembanyama gets better, he should leapfrog those big men, which could prove to be a matchup nightmare in general, but especially for Eastern Conference teams that don't have the same caliber of bigs. His play this season, averaging 25.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and an eye-popping four blocks, may only be the beginning, with him probably only scratching the surface of his talent.
That is a scary thought to the opposing team but music to the ears of Spurs fans who are hoping that they have another elite player on their hands after previously having Hall of Famers David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Based on his play thus far, he is well on his way to matching or even eclipsing them, no matter which conference he's in.
