Perfect playoff stat makes Fred VanVleet's old Spurs trash talk even funnier months later

We're two weeks away from training camp, folks. The Spurs are coming off an epic season that ended with a trip to the NBA Finals, and even though they lost, it was exhilarating to watch San Antonio win in the playoffs again. This Sleeper Hoops post was a reminder that not everyone is fortunate enough to remember what that feels like. Take the rival Rockets, for example.

They haven't won a series since 2020.

Only seven teams in the league have longer droughts than Houston. They are the Trail Blazers, Pelicans, Wizards, Bulls, Magic, Kings, and Hornets—not exactly the cream of the crop. Yet that's the company H-Town currently keeps, making it more hilarious to look back at the jealousy-infused comments Fred VanVleet made about the Silver and Black during their awesome year.

"We were better than them the last two years. Have they had a playoff series?" VanVleet said about the hype surrounding San Antonio. "Slow the **** down."

I don't know why having a playoff series and losing was supposed to mean that they were better than the Spurs. But the egregiousness of his comments only increased with Houston's first-round loss to the Lakers, despite Luka Doncic missing the entire series and Austin Reaves only playing in two of the six games.

It might have been less embarrassing for them to just not make it at all.

Meanwhile, the Spurs, in their first-ever playoff appearance as a group, won round one in five games, round two in six games, and then beat the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in seven, ending the two-week battle on OKC's home floor. Seems like the hype was very much warranted. San Antonio was on a tear.

Fred had a lot of time to yap during the season due to an unfortunate ACL and meniscus tear that ruined his year before it began. On the other hand, we are in the days of unabashed opinions from our athletes, so maybe we wouldn't have been saved whether he was playing or not.

Everyone wants to be a podcaster now, and when you put a microphone in front of someone long enough, there's a chance they'll put their foot in their mouth. VanVleet definitely got a toenail stuck in his teeth on this one, but Spurs fans should appreciate him. He gave us another reason to point and laugh at the Rockets.
