The last thing the Spurs need is to blow up their young core for the chance at a speed run to a couple of titles that aren't guaranteed. But that's exactly what Andy Bailey is suggesting in his article on Bleacher Report, claiming the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes is far from over and naming San Antonio as a potential landing spot.
"If the Bucks stumble out of the gates, you can bet the rumors will start flying again. In the meantime, we already know of at least one team that has the assets to make a serious offer for the superstar, while remaining a contender after acquiring him," Bailey wrote before naming the Spurs.
He also brings up a quote from Giannis himself where he says that he doesn't want to get traded but acknowledges that it's a real possibility. That's all well and good. I would be thrilled to have the Greek Freak on this roster, but not at the expense of both Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle. That's a little too rich for my blood, and the Spurs should laugh at the notion.
The Spurs' future would go down the drain with this Giannis deal
We all know how phenomenal a player the 12-year Milwaukee veteran is. He's going to walk into the Hall of Fame on a red carpet when his time comes. But he's 31 years old, and with Victor Wembanyama only entering his third year at 21, it would be irresponsible to give up all the assets Bailey suggests in his proposal.
The full details say the Spurs would receive Giannis and only Giannis. The Bucks would receive Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle on top of four first-round picks. Another writer on the BR staff, Grant Hughes, just wrote a piece about the best young cores in the league. The Spurs came in third with Dev, Harper, and Steph all named as core players alongside Wemby.
This deal would completely gut that youth for a chance to compete at the highest level for a few years, but when Giannis starts to decline, San Antonio would find themselves in a rough spot. Remember, D. Harp was projected as the number one overall pick in his draft before Cooper Flagg reclassified. He's expected to be a star in this league.
Castle is coming off a strong Rookie of the Year campaign and, with comparisons to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, can be a special player if he reaches his ceiling. We're talking about giving up a couple of guys with potential as top 30 or top 20 stars in the NBA. We don't know how much time Giannis has to be dominant, but we do know that Vic is at the beginning of his arc.
He'll need running mates for the long haul, and the organization has already found them. Then you'd want them to give up their best chance of replacing those guys by dealing four first-round picks on top of giving away two of the most promising young guards in the league? Nope. There's no way they should even consider a deal like this.
