NBA just handed Spurs perfect path to quick revenge against the Knicks

Following the release of the San Antonio Spurs' 2026-27 NBA schedule, it's clear they have the perfect chance to win NBA gold. The Spurs came painfully close to winning both the NBA Cup Finals and the NBA Finals last season, only to lose both times to the New York Knicks.

Fortunately, they were assigned an easy group to qualify for the NBA Cup playoffs. They are set to play the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers in group play.

The Kings and Warriors both failed to make the playoffs last season and don't project to make the postseason this upcoming season. Meanwhile, the Blazers are much improved, while the Lakers are probably worse than they were last year.

The Spurs should have a clear path to the NBA Cup playoffs

Even if the Spurs go 3-1, they should have a strong chance of making the NBA Cup playoffs for a second straight year.

That doesn't necessarily mean the Spurs will have an easy path back to the NBA Cup Finals, but it makes getting there much easier. They will still no doubt have to face teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets, but they are much improved compared to last year.

San Antonio having a relatively clear path to the NBA Cup playoffs gives them a legit shot to erase their disappointing NBA Finals performance. Better yet, they could face the Knicks again and exact some revenge ahead of a potential Finals rematch.

A more experienced Spurs team could beat the Knicks in the NBA Cup Finals

Hopefully, San Antonio has learned from their mistakes in both disappointing losses. During the In-season Tournament Finals, they were clearly the better team but lost their momentum in the third quarter after getting crushed on the offensive glass.

That gifted the Knicks second-chance points that eventually doomed the Spurs. In the NBA Finals, San Antonio blew a double-digit lead in each of their losses, including a 26-point meltdown in Game 4. It hurts to even type that.

San Antonio having more experience should hopefully help them keep the foot on the gas. Doing so is what helped them knock off the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.

Unfortunately, they didn't use what they learned in the NBA Finals, and it cost them big time. Thanks to the in-season tournament, they will get a chance to put those hard-learned lessons to good use.

The Spurs, having a cakewalk qualifying group, should be well positioned to win the NBA Cup Finals and hopefully the NBA Finals next season.
