For the first time in years, the San Antonio Spurs will enter a season with postseason expectations. Their revamped roster appears ready to contend, and they could very well find themselves in the playoffs if everything goes right for them this season.
Nevertheless, they should also keep a close eye on the trade market in case another star becomes available. Namely Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
It's entirely possible San Antonio doesn't need Giannis to compete for a championship. Even so, they have the assets needed to make a potential blockbuster deal to acquire another star, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer
What would a potential Giannis trade look like for the Spurs?
A potential deal for Giannis would almost certainly require San Antonio to give up Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, and at least two first-round picks. That might be too rich for many Spurs fans who see the team as a future juggernaut.
That may very well be the case. But if they have a chance to acquire a top-three player in the NBA, they should probably jump at the chance to do so. After all, San Antonio could go from being a potential playoff team to a potential title favorite, and not just for this year but for the next two or three seasons beyond that.
The Spurs shouldn't close the door on a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade
Not only that, but trading several players to acquire Giannis would have the added benefit of clearing out playing time for the likes of Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant. Both of whom have very bright futures, but will have to battle for minutes the next couple of seasons.
Doing a potential four-for-one deal midseason is a massive decision that shouldn't be made lightly, given how much it will cost San Antonio. However, if the Spurs emerge as a top-four team in the Western Conference this season and have a shot at acquiring an elite NBA player, they should pounce on the chance to do so.
Even if it might be a three-year window with Giannis, the Spurs being in contention and having several deep playoff runs could help them out in the long run. Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Harper, and Bryant would all gain valuable playoff experience that could carry over, allowing the Spurs to contend post-Giannis.
Overall, Giannis potentially becoming available should pique the interest of the Spurs, who have the assets needed to make a blockbuster trade this season. It could cost the Spurs plenty of assets, but the end result could be San Antonio winning a championship with Giannis paired with Wembanyama.
