Mitch Johnson is taking an unexpected step to become an even better Spurs coach

Mitch Johnson is coming off one of the greatest rookie head coaching seasons we've ever seen. No matter how you slice it, taking one of the youngest teams in the league from the lottery to 62 wins and a trip to the NBA Finals is incredible. However, despite his successes, Coach Johnson must continue to grow, and he's seen trying to do exactly that in a Hard Knocks clip making the rounds on social media.

Mike Macdonald just led Seattle to a Super Bowl title in his second year as head coach of the team. Like Mitch, the Seahawks leader is one of the youngest in his league to hold such a position (39 years old).

Who better to learn from than another bright, young mind who just reached the peak in America's most popular sport?

Coach Johnson knows he has a lot to learn

The move says a lot about Coach Johnson, reinforcing some things Spurs fans love to see. He's humble—you have to be to seek help outside of your circle. San Antonio had a magical run last season, but the ending was anything but supernatural.

The dud they laid in the NBA Finals was a product of several things. Some of it was due to the players running out of gas and finally seeing their youth catch up to them, while others were coaching errors. Fans were very critical of the first-year orchestrator during the Knicks series for what felt like mistakes in the moment and still feel like mistakes months later.

Timeouts weren't called to stop runs enough; there was a lack of direction when the team looked out of sorts, substitution patterns were poor, and the list goes on. Johnson did pretty much all of these things right up until the final round, but he still deserves the grace we give the players.

The first-time trip to the NBA Finals was a shared experience for all. They'll be stronger as a unit because of what they learned and their dedication to growing from it. Victor Wembanyama and the rest of the crew have already been in the gym working on their skills and chemistry. That's their piece of the puzzle right now.

Mitch is doing his part. He could just rely on the experience of Gregg Popovich and Billy Donovan, but instead, he's exploring additional avenues to acquire wisdom. The NFL and NBA may be different sports, but communication and leadership skills are transferable. Expect San Antonio to hit the ground running because they're attacking the offseason from every angle.
