The LeBron James plot thickens. When the Lakers were informed James wouldn't be returning for a ninth season in purple and gold, San Antonio already stood out as a great fit for the NBA's all-time leading scorer. But now, the signs that these two are a perfect fit are flashing neon lights in the Spurs' faces.

Well, it just so happens the Silver and Black can offer him a minimum deal and a legitimate shot at winning his fifth NBA title. Very few teams can provide an undeniable title window without needing him to carry a heavy load. He can age gracefully in the Alamo City, mentor the next face of the league, and end his career by hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy one last time.

The Spurs check every box LeBron needs

James is one of the smartest players to ever lace up a pair of sneakers. So even he knows that he can't carry the load on any team looking to seriously compete for a championship. In San Antonio, he wouldn't have to. Not even close. Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox, and Dylan Harper will set the table on most possessions, and Victor Wembanyama is Weapon X.

Teams will be too focused on stopping the onslaught that those talented athletes will already be unleashing on the court to worry about what 41-year-old LeBron is doing. He'll have opportunistic chances to make an impact in whatever way he deems fit as he reads the floor from the wings. He also won't be expected to play high minutes.

James has already been one of the most well-conditioned players in the league. I don't expect that to change. But putting that additional wear-and-tear on his body now isn't smart. He's not the Iron Man he once was. The man would never get injured badly enough to miss real time back in his heyday. That's no longer the case. Fortunately, San Antonio is known for helping players age gracefully.

No contender could use LeBron more than San Antonio

This statement isn't a claim that other contenders couldn't use him as well. That just wouldn't be a true statement. I could see Denver, Boston, Detroit, and a few other teams requesting his services for a similar reason: to help get them over the top. But those squads are mostly veteran ball clubs. Some of them have already won a championship. The Spurs have not and are filled with young guys.

As talented as Victor Wembanyama is, he's still only 22 years old. A chance to learn from King James would be invaluable for someone as determined as he is to run the league for the foreseeable future. Bron is also a tremendous passer with insane court vision, and three years into his career, Wemby's teammates still miss opportunities to get him the ball for easy buckets at times.

LeBron would make those reads and get those passes to him. As young playmakers, being a part of that would only raise Castle and Harper's IQs. There are so many benefits to a possible marriage here that it's hard to ignore.

Every new report about James is shortening the list of teams that make sense for him, but the Spurs are still on it. The Warriors aren't winning with him; they'd be too old. Miami won't win either; their spacing would be horrible. And not even LeBron James can save James Harden from himself in Cleveland. San Antonio is not only the smart option; it's the best one for both parties.
