The San Antonio Spurs are only several games into their new season, but long-time forward Keldon Johnson continues to prove them right after they decided against extending him.
Johnson might have been expecting an extension over the summer, especially after winning Sixth Man of the Year last season. However, he played poorly in the NBA playoffs, and the Spurs wisely declined to sign him to a long-term deal.
They can always bring him back on a short-term contract, provided he plays well this season, but Johnson hasn't just yet. As a result, the Silver and Black are completely justified in holding off on extending him.
Keldon Johnson gives the Spurs more proof they made the right call
Thus far, Johnson simply hasn't been all that effective. Through five games, he's averaging just 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 20% from three--all down from last season.
Worse yet for Johnson, his minutes may soon begin to dry up. Tobias Harris will soon make his Spurs debut, and San Antonio could have a logjam at forward.
San Antonio simply has so many options at forward for Johnson to play poorly, and he could see his minutes drop like a stone as a result. The Spurs already have Carter Bryant playing spot minutes, and Johnson could also soon find himself in a similar role.
Keldon Johnson has more competition for minutes this season
If Johnson continues to struggle production-wise, coach Mitch Johnson could further reduce his role or cut him from the rotation altogether. To his credit, KJ has continued to play hard, providing immediate energy off the bench.
Whether that be diving for loose balls or swooping in for offensive rebounds, he's always doing something on the court. What's different about this season is that he hasn't been effective as a scorer.
His three-point shot has yet to come around, and he's getting to the rim less than he did before. That's a concern and doesn't bode well for his spot in the rotation and his future with the team.
The best-case scenario is that he will bounce back and contribute to the Spurs this season. However, the Spurs have been justified in not extending him with his play thus far.
If Johnson can't contribute, San Antonio can pivot away from him, with Harris and Bryant both more than capable of helping the Spurs this season. However, if Johnson can, then he might have a role with this team beyond this season
