Injured San Antonio Spurs rookie Jayden Quaintance may not have a timeline for his debut, but he could still make an impact this season. His health has been the topic of discussion since being drafted 20th by the Spurs in the 2026 NBA Draft.
His most recent surgery could keep him out six months, which would put his return at around January. That's assuming that San Antonio doesn't redshirt him and have him sit out the entire season.
But, if he can debut sometime in January, he could slowly but surely ramp up his playing time and potentially even make an impact this season.
Spurs fans should be cautiously optimistic about Jayden Quaintance
If he is able to play this season, even then it would likely be a slow ramp-up, with him possibly even playing some in the NBA G League.
However, his skill set could allow him to eventually earn small but meaningful minutes on the big roster, like Carter Bryant did last season. I'm not saying backup center Luke Kornet should be looking over his shoulder this season.
All I'm saying is that San Antonio clearly drafted Quaintance to be his long-term replacement. Getting him some reps this season could help both him and the Spurs out in the long run.
We all remember San Antonio's center rotation last season after Victor Wembanyama and Kornet. Bismack Biyombo, Mason Plumlee, and Kelly Olynyk—which I like to call the trio of danger—weighed down the Spurs' center rotation. Fortunately, Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr. can actually play, even as rookies.
The Spurs are betting on Jayden Quaintance being healthy
Had he been healthy, Quaintance would have probably been a lottery pick. That gives the Spurs a unique opportunity. Taking him with the 20th pick is a gamble but a reasonable one.
If he pans out, then he'd give them an elite rim protector and a lob threat with terrific athleticism. If he doesn't, then having Reed Jr., who was a safe pick, is an insurance policy.
The hope is that Quaintance can form a long-term pairing with Wembanyama, and that could possibly start in earnest next season. First, he'll have to get healthy, then play well in limited minutes.
If he can clear those hurdles this season, then he may find a role similar to that of Bryant last season. Quaintance may not play big minutes but could still make an impact in short five-minute bursts, which will hopefully be a sign of things to come.
