Instant Dylan Harper update just erased huge part of Kawhi Leonard's legacy

After being drafted second overall, it appears that new San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper already has a jersey. He may reportedly wear the number 2 jersey.

Harper using the number two jersey is more notable than it otherwise would be considering that former Spur Kawhi Leonard used to wear that number over his seven-year career with the Spurs.

While Kawhi Leonard helped lead the Spurs to a championship in 2014, his demanding a trade permanently soured his legacy in San Antonio. Thus, it seems unlikely that he will ever get his jersey retired by the Spurs. Especially now that Harper may be wearing his jersey and he has a chance to carve out a great legacy with the Spurs.

The Spurs giving away Kawhi Leonard's jersey is a statement

Harper possibly choosing to use the number two as his jersey number is also interesting in another way. This is considering that had Leonard never demanded a trade, they may have never ended up in a position to draft Harper.

Leonard might still be a Spur in some bizarro world with the team struggling to build around. Instead, they now have Fox, who has a chance to help replace Leonard in the minds of Spurs fans. Particularly now as they build around superstar Victor Wembanyama.

Dylan Harper has a chance to replace Kawhi Leonard's legacy

Despite making meaningful strides last season, San Antonio has desperately needed a second option behind Wembanyama. San Antonio definitely got that with De'Aaron Fox, at least in the short term, while Harper could be the long-term co-star with Wembanyama.

That is the hope, at least, with Harper joining a team that already has a crowded backcourt. Still, he has the upside to rise to the top. That could eventually make him the team's number two option alongside Wembanyama and possibly Stephon Castle.

Ultimately, the Spurs possibly allowing Harper to wear Leonard's number 2 jersey is notable. If Harper is as good as we hope, then he could quickly make Leonard a distant memory.
