After days of speculation, former San Antonio Spur Kawhi Leonard has a new team, but one hidden trade detail should infuriate Spurs fans. The Spurs were previously forced to trade Leonard after he demanded to be moved.
BREAKING: The Los Angeles Clippers are nearing deal sending Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, 2 first-round picks, 1 pick swap and 2 second-rounders, sources tell ESPN. That resulted in a middling trade in which the Spurs acquired DeMar DeRozan, a future first-round pick that turned out to be Keldon Johnson, and Jakob Poeltl. However, the Los Angeles Clippers just received two unprotected first-round picks, two second-round picks, an All-Star in Brandon Ingram, and a former lottery pick and Grady Dick.
It's easy to spot the difference between the two trades. The Clippers got top dollar for Leonard while the Spurs didn't, including two unprotected future firsts.
Spurs fans should be infuriated the Kawhi Leonard trade
Although the Spurs were on bigger and better things than Leonard, it still hurts that he managed to receive more value at 35 than he did at 25. It's also interesting to know that the Raptors were willing to take him back after he left their team high and dry.
It seems that Leonard always gets what he wants. He wanted out of Los Angeles and back with the Raptors. Now he's back in Toronto and will soon have a max contract extension to show for it.
I've never seen a player get absolutely everything that they want. He wanted out of San Antonio and to play in L.A. He got it. Even with a one-year layover in Toronto, he won a championship and became the most important man in franchise history. Insane.
The Spurs can officially move on from Kawhi Leonard
Despite the possibility of a reunion, that now won't happen. The Spurs can move on to bigger and better things. Let's be real here.
Victor Wembanyama is a better player than Leonard was in San Antonio. They can't concern themselves with fading stars. Credit to the Clippers for getting a haul back from a player that they had to bend the rules to steal away from the Raptors.
At least Spurs fans can relish in the fact that Leonard failed in Los Angeles. Instead of leading them to a championship, he led them into mediocrity. With Leonard now in Toronto once again, it's not crazy to think the Spurs might see the Raptors in the NBA Finals one day. That would give them the perfect chance to put their history with Leonard to bed once and for all.
