After an exciting offseason, the San Antonio Spurs probably won't make another big move. At least not until near the trade deadline, with Bleacher Report even floating a surprising name, Bam Adebayo.
The Miami Heat probably aren't looking to trade Adebayo, at least not at this point, unless they struggle in what is looking like a joke of an Eastern Conference. In that case, the door might be open for the Spurs to make a play for him, with Bleacher Report proposing a blockbuster deal to bring him to San Antonio.
Proposed San Antonio Spurs trade would land them Bam Adebayo
Bleacher Report's deal would see the Spurs land Adebayo. It will cost them, however, with them having to give up Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and two first-round picks.
Despite the avalanche of bad trade proposals late summer usually provides, this is actually an interesting one that might make sense for both sides. Despite the Heat clearly looking to rebuild around Tyler Herro and Adebayo, Adebayo is older than some might expect.
He is already 28, and while he is among the best two-way players in the NBA, if the Heat are going through an extended rebuild, it may not make sense for them to do so with someone nearing their 30s.
Herro is three years younger, and while Adebayo is the better player, Herro comes with a more generous timeline. Pairing him with a rising star in Castle and getting two firsts for their trouble might be intriguing for them. Meanwhile, the Spurs getting Adebayo is equally as intriguing.
If Bam Adebayo is available, the Spurs should be interested
Trading Castle before or during his second season would be surprising but perhaps not out of the question. Castle's stock is sky-high and would be doing the heavy lifting as far as trade value for Adebayo, but it could be argued that Adebayo is the better fit long-term.
He clearly has a preference for playing power forward and would be able to do so by pairing him with Wembanyama. He has come a long way offensively, thriving in the mid-range and averaging a terrific 18.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.1 stocks per game last season.
Defensively, he has consistently been one of the best players in the NBA, given his versatility. Given the Spurs' question mark at power forward with Harrison Barnes being 33 years old and concerns surrounding Jeremy Sochan's shooting, having Adebayo there would solve that potential problem.
Moving Castle would also uncrowd the backcourt. Dylan Harper would join De'Aaron Fox in the backcourt, with Barnes possibly sliding down to small forward.
Making this trade might not be popular. But it would make sense for the Spurs in the sense that it would clear out their backcourt logjam and pair Fox and Wembanyama with a third star who is arguably a top-five big man in the NBA.
All in all, the Heat may not be anywhere near ready to trade Adebayo. But if they were, he'd make plenty of sense for the Spurs even if it might cost them Castle and future assets.
