Gregg Popovich was present at the San Antonio Spurs' shootaround on Monday morning. Fans will be relieved to hear that he looked a bit healthier and better than he did during his last public appearance. Overall, this is a great sign for the Spurs legend.
After suffering from a mild stroke in November 2024, Popovich was forced to step away from his head coaching duties for an indefinite period. Then earlier this year on May 2, he officially announced his intention to retire as the Spurs' head coach. It was a difficult decision no doubt, but one that had to be made for the good of his health.
Both players and media have reacted positively to this development. "He looks amazing," Keldon Johnson said. "It always puts a smile on my face seeing him here. This is my first year without Pop, so it has been a whirlwind of emotions. I've been really nervous. I didn't really know what to expect, but Mitch [Johnson] has done an amazing job. He's really going his thing. I trust Mitch. Everybody trusts Mitch, and I'm excited."

Popovich looked healthier during his appearance at Spurs' shootaround
Seeing pop in the Spurs' facility once again amid plenty of uncertainty and health concerns certainly brings a sense of reassurance and steadiness within the organization. In the eyes of many fans, it's a sort of symbol of the old guard and the new era of this franchise coming together.
Pop's return is more than just symbolic. It absolutely suggests real progress in his health and recovery process, which I'm certain a large portion of the fan base has been anxious about. And even if the coaching legend won't be directing the team from the sidelines anymore, just having his presence at these practices and in the building is a sign that he's still providing guidance, mentorship, and leadership within the organization.
Overall, this is a reminder that Gregg Popovich appears not only to be healthy, but that his influence in San Antonio is alive and well, too. Fans are going to see his continued involvement and rightly see it as a signal that he's still invested in the success of the Spurs. And as for many of the players, seeing their old coach roaming around and looking better can help to reaffirm their mission, and boost morale as well.
It's not every day we get to see a public appearance from Gregg Popovich, and this is certainly one to be celebrated.
