Heartbreaking NBA Finals loss may unlock scary new level for Victor Wembanyama

Following the San Antonio Spurs' heartbreaking NBA Finals loss, superstar Victor Wembanyama has all the motivation in the world to reach the next level. We are already seeing him back on the court with the French national team, and thus far he's played impressively well.

Perhaps he's using the opportunity to take out his frustration on the court and could be setting himself up for a revenge season with the Spurs. Normally, playing for the French national team after an NBA Finals run is a recipe for disaster, but it could be just what he needed to have a bigger year next season.

The shortened offseason means that he will have less time to work on his game than he normally would. The plus side is that he is playing against top competition on an international stage, including facing superstar Nikola Jokic already this summer.

Wembanyama will hopefully hit the ground running next season after having spent much of the spring and summer playing high-level ball. Better yet, he may finally be comfortable incorporating some of the moves he's been working on but hasn't shown off yet.

That may include a hook shot that he has been working on adding to his game since last season. He has also worked with Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon this summer and will hopefully be much better in the post next season as a result.

Even if he doesn't add a single thing to his game over the summer, if he continues to add more muscle, he could better withstand the physicality of the NBA.

Wembanyama must use NBA Finals loss to fuel MVP-caliber season

During the playoffs, teams tried their best to beat up Wembanyama. He held up surprisingly well, but it's not just about holding up well. It's about being able to punish other teams.

Given how he's looked this far this summer, he looks well positioned to do just that next season. Despite finishing third in MVP and being the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year winner, he has yet to scratch the surface of his potential on both ends of the floor.

If he focuses on things such as rolling to the basket, taking more threes, and attacking closeouts, then he could make another big offensive leap. The better Wembanyama gets on both ends, the better the Spurs will.

He has always played with fire and intensity. But after a heartbreaking NBA Finals loss, he should have all the motivation in the world to carry San Antonio to a championship.
