The Grizzlies selected Cameron Boozer with the third overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Why does that matter to the Spurs? Because he fits the archetype that has given Victor Wembanyama problems. Shorter, but strong, mobile, and physical, with an ability to knock down an outside shot and take you off the dribble. Think Naz Reid and Karl-Anthony Towns, but with a higher ceiling.
Don't get me wrong, Memphis would have picked him whether Vic existed or not. He was the best player on the board by a mile. But that just means things worked out perfectly for them. Recent reports indicated that much of the NBA would be focusing on putting together rosters capable of taking down the Silver and Black.
Well, a Southwest Division rival just made a move they believe will help them achieve that goal.
Spurs have become the hunted already
San Antonio's reality next season will be as the standard opponents will be looking to match/surpass. They'll need to be ready for that because it's a little different than approaching the season as the hunter. They caught teams off guard last year. Nobody really knew how good the Silver and Black would be, and once they showed them, doubt remained.
By the time the threat was fully realized, it was too late to do anything about it. The trade deadline had passed, and momentum was rolling. This summer, the rest of the league will be approaching their rosters with eyes wide open.
The Spurs made it all the way to the NBA Finals in their very first playoff run as a group, and Wemby was more than a handful. The NBA took notice. They won't stand idly by and watch San Antonio put together a dynasty, so Brian Wright must remain vigilant to ensure the team stays ahead of the competition.
Fortunately, it helps to have struck gold in three straight drafts. Wembanyama is still getting started, so between his extraterrestrial ability and the All-NBA potential of the Slash Bros., the league will have their hands full no matter what they do. The 7'4" Frenchman may be the head of the snake, but we're talking about a mighty large serpent.
San Antonio is built to last, and their asset chest gives them the flexibility to pivot if necessary. Wright may have gone through a patch of uncertainty from the fans, but he's more than earned the benefit of the doubt.
