The hottest name in the rumor mill this offseason is Giannis Antetokounmpo. Milwaukee lost in the first round of the playoffs for the third year in a row, and Giannis has made it clear that he wants to win more than anything.
With only two years left on his deal, the Bucks enter dangerous territory, uncertain if their star wants to stay put or seek greener pastures elsewhere. His most recent post on Instagram doesn't necessarily clear things up.
I can see why some might see this as an encouraging message. Those people most likely root for the Bucks, though. It's not the image that tells the tale, it's the salute emoji. You see that often in farewell messages.
One thing is for sure: many fans in the NBA community want to see the Greek Freak take his talents to a different city. His greatness is being wasted in Milwaukee at this point, and there are several places he could go that would make better use of his outrageous output. I say 'several' places, but I'm talking about San Antonio, who have everything necessary to make a trade happen if the cards fall their way.
The Spurs are uniquely positioned to acquire Giannis
ESPN's Brian Windhorst was on Get Up this morning talking about the possible destinations for Antetokounmpo if he asks out of Cream City. The Spurs were high on Windy's list.
"The Spurs can afford a giant contract more than some of these other teams can," he explained. "The Spurs have two lottery picks in this draft, a bunch of young players, and a bunch of draft assets. They could pretty much trade for anybody."
He's right, and the time to strike is now. Houston and Detroit are other intriguing options. They can afford Giannis, and they have some combination of young players and draft picks they could send back in a deal. However, only one team has Victor Wembanyama. That means something now.
Brian Windhorst was also the first to proclaim San Antonio a destination city. He knew the power of Wembanyama. Players recognize emerging threats, and there's no greater threat than what the Spurs have growing in Alamo City.
It wasn't long after he predicted that guys would want to play next to the Alien that we started hearing whispers that Trae Young wanted to make his way to SA. Draft prospects were next, with guys like Rob Dillingham or AJ Dybantsa expressing a desire to wear silver and black.
De'Aaron Fox is the only one of the aforementioned players who successfully made his way down south, as he, too, wanted to hop on board the Wemby train before it left the station.
Giannis could be the next player to succeed in such an endeavor. He's in the middle of his prime, and that prime makes him an all-time great player. He'd be a welcome addition, so we'll save a seat for him on the Wembanyama Express.
