Former Spurs star is nearing legendary status and a historic NBA milestone

It's been a while since former Spur DeMar DeRozan last suited up for the Silver and Black, and he's been doing big things since being traded. While he is currently a free agent after being bought out by the Sacramento Kings, he is knocking on the door of NBA history.

DeRozan might not be who many fans think of when it comes to all-time great scores, but he will soon join elite company. DeRozan is expected to enter the top 10 in all-time scoring by the end of the 2027-28 season.

In fact, if he plays three more seasons, he could become one of just seven players to ever score at least 30,000 points.

Demar DeRozan is knocking on the door of NBA history

DeRozan spent three seasons with the Spurs. While they only made the playoffs once during that span, he served as a necessary stopgap star after Kawhi Leonard demanded a trade.

During those three years, he averaged an impressive 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. He and LaMarcus Aldridge also helped the Spurs maintain relevancy as they entered a new era.

Unfortunately, he didn't stay long enough to carve out a huge legacy with the Spurs. Ironically, despite being criticized for primarily being a mid-range scorer, he has had incredible longevity.

Actually, he is one of just four players from the 2009 NBA Draft to still be playing. The others being James Harden, Steph Curry, and Jrue Holiday.

The Spurs were a stop on DeMar DeRozan's Hall of Fame career

Although DeRozan had a notable three-year stint with the Spurs, he never seemed comfortable being in San Antonio. That's not to say that he didn't give us his all, he just didn't want to be traded by the Toronto Raptors.

The Spurs ultimately traded him to the Chicago Bulls and they used the assets from that deal to acquire De'Aaron Fox. Things ultimately didn't worked out for DeRozan in Chicago, nor did they in Sacramento.

To his credit, he has been highly productive in every career stop. In fact, in 17 seasons, he's averaged 74.3 games played and 1571 points scored. His peak may not be that of a top-10 scorer, but he has been a well above-average scorer for nearly two decades.

If he has three more years left in him, he could solidify himself as an all-time great scorer, with the Spurs being a stop in a future Hall of Famer's career.
